Appearances of Disease:

There is a large, fragile "vegetation" - a mixture of thrombus ("blood clot"), bacteria and inflammatory cells - on the anterior cusp (right hand side) of the mitral valve, and there is a perforation (rupture) of the valve beneath the vegetation. The other valves and the myocardium (heart muscle) are normal.
