Gout is a common metabolic disorder, predominantly affecting males, resulting from high levels of urate in the blood. Urate is a breakdown product of DNA, which when present in excess can precipitate in the tissues as crystals of sodium urate. The accumulation of these crystals over many years results in damage to the joints, kidneys and other tissues. This condition can be made worse by excessive alcohol intake.
