Appearances of Disease:
The specimen consists of the trachea and major bronchi. The whole
of the tracheal epithelium below the tracheostomy opening is covered with exudate, which
has accumulated at the opening of the left bronchus, and numerous small areas of
"pseudomembrane" (typical of diphtheria, caused by a combination of fibrinous
exudate and sloughed mucosal cells) can be seen.
