Appearance of Disease:

The specimen consists of the organs removed at operation. The uterus including the cervix measured 10.5 x 7.0 x 6.5 cm. The left ovary has been replaced by a mass 9.5 x 8.0 x 8.0 cm, which is a benign teratoma. A teratoma is a tumour derived from a primitive cell that has the capacity to give rise to any tissue of the body. The cystic tumour has been opened to display a separate mass, 5.0 x 3.5 x 2.0 cm, covered by skin from which hair is growing. From one side protrude 4 well-formed teeth. Several smaller cystic swellings are incorporated in the wall of the main cyst; these contain greasy material. The right ovary contains a fluid-filled cyst, 2.0 cm in diameter, and a second cyst, 0.5 cm in diameter. Several thin-walled cysts filled with water-clear fluid are attached to the outer end of the right fallopian tube.
